Why Super Bowl Sunday Deserves a Sweet Touch

The Super Bowl isn’t just a sporting event; it’s a culinary spectacle, often hailed as the second biggest foodie holiday in the United States, right after Thanksgiving. While this revelation might surprise some, it makes perfect sense when you consider the sheer volume of food consumed. After weeks of post-holiday health resolutions, juice cleanses, kale salads, and green smoothies, Super Bowl Sunday offers a “free pass” to indulge. It’s a day when buffalo wings, chili cheese fries, and an endless array of chips and dips take center stage, all in the spirit of celebrating a football game.

And let’s be honest, who’s complaining? I might not be the most ardent football enthusiast, but any occasion that brings friends and family together for a feast of delicious, comforting food gets my enthusiastic approval. Especially when it’s perfectly acceptable to kick back in your favorite tee shirt and sweatpants! However, amidst the savory spread, I always make sure to carve out a special place for dessert. And this year, I’m bringing something truly extraordinary: Peanut Butter Stuffed Soft Pretzels with a heavenly Malted Vanilla Cream Cheese Dip.

Budget-Friendly Entertaining with Aldi

My husband and I absolutely adore hosting friends and family. It’s one of our greatest joys. We relish the process of planning the menu together, meticulously writing it out on our chalkboard wall, and then assigning who will prepare each dish. Our kitchen truly becomes a hub of collaborative fun. However, the one aspect that often causes a bit of stress is the cost. Entertaining can be surprisingly expensive, and keeping the budget in check is always a priority.

I still remember the last time I hosted Thanksgiving dinner, a few years ago. The total bill for ingredients exceeded $300, which definitely put a dent in our finances. While I loved every moment of it, I knew there had to be a more economical way to entertain without sacrificing quality or taste.

My revelation came when I decided to purchase our Christmas Eve food at Aldi. I was absolutely astounded by the savings. We enjoyed a magnificent spiral-sliced ham, fluffy homemade buttermilk biscuits, creamy broccoli cheddar soup, an assortment of chips and dips for snacking, a cozy hot cocoa bar, and a huge variety of homemade cookies for dessert. I sourced almost every single item from Aldi, and the grand total was less than $85! This experience solidified Aldi as my go-to destination for all my entertaining needs. Their commitment to high-quality products at incredibly affordable prices makes elaborate meals and impressive spreads entirely achievable without breaking the bank.

So, for this year’s Super Bowl bash, I’m confidently relying on Aldi to supply the ingredients for these show-stopping peanut butter-stuffed soft pretzels, ready to be passed around hot out of the oven.

Crafting the Perfect Peanut Butter Stuffed Soft Pretzels

Have you ever tried your hand at making homemade soft pretzels? If not, you’re in for a delightful surprise. They are surprisingly easy to make, requiring just a handful of basic pantry staples. The process is not only straightforward but also incredibly rewarding, filling your kitchen with that irresistible bakery aroma.

Aldi Ingredients Collage

The idea of stuffing these soft pretzels with peanut butter chips might sound a bit like culinary magic, but I promise it’s entirely doable. It’s a technique similar to making dumplings or ravioli, where the key is to ensure the filling is perfectly sealed within the dough. This attention to detail is crucial because if the peanut butter chips poke out even slightly, they will melt and ooze during the boiling and baking process, which is truly a sad sight! A little trick: if your peanut butter chips are on the larger side, consider giving them a rough chop. Smaller pieces tend to be more cooperative and easier to seal within the dough, minimizing the risk of leakage.

Once you’ve mastered the art of sealing, the rest of the pretzel-making process is standard. The brief boil in baking soda water gives the pretzels their signature chewy exterior and helps them achieve that beautiful golden-brown crust. A quick egg wash and a sprinkle of kosher salt before baking enhance both the flavor and appearance.

These peanut butter stuffed soft pretzels are best served warm, allowing the peanut butter filling to become wonderfully melty and gooey. That warm, sweet, and slightly salty combination is pure bliss. And to truly complete the “Chubby Hubby” experience, you absolutely cannot skip the sweet and creamy dip.

The Perfect Pairing: Malted Vanilla Cream Cheese Dip

No Chubby Hubby-inspired treat is complete without a rich and flavorful dip to complement its star. Our Malted Vanilla Cream Cheese Dip with Chocolate Chips is the ideal accompaniment, bringing in the classic vanilla malt and chocolate notes that make the ice cream so iconic. This dip is incredibly simple to whip up, yet it delivers a complex flavor profile that elevates the entire dessert.

The base of softened cream cheese provides a tangy counterpoint to the sweetness, while malted milk powder introduces that nostalgic, distinctive malt flavor. Granulated sugar and vanilla extract enhance the sweetness and aromatic depth. Finally, cold heavy whipping cream is slowly drizzled in and whipped until the dip becomes light, fluffy, and holds stiff peaks, creating a cloud-like texture that’s incredibly satisfying. Folding in mini chocolate chips adds bursts of rich cocoa flavor and a delightful textural contrast.

This dip isn’t just for pretzels; it’s versatile enough to be served with fruit, graham crackers, or even enjoyed by the spoonful! However, when paired with the warm, peanut butter-stuffed soft pretzels, it creates an unparalleled dessert experience that will have your guests raving. The melty peanut butter, the chewy pretzel, and the cool, creamy, malty-chocolate dip — it’s a symphony of textures and flavors that embodies comfort and indulgence.

Instructions

To Make the Peanut Butter Stuffed Soft Pretzels:

  1. Place the brown sugar in a large mixing bowl and pour the warm water over. Stir to combine, and sprinkle the yeast over the surface. Allow to proof for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. Stir in the oil, and add the flour, a cup at a time. When the dough starts to form a ball and pulls away from the sides of the bowl, transfer it to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. (You may not need all of the flour.) If the dough seems very sticky, knead in up to 1/3 cup additional flour, as needed.
  3. Lightly mist the mixing bowl with non-stick spray and place the dough inside. Cover with plastic wrap, and allow to rise in a warm place, about one hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough, divide it into 12 equal balls, and roll each into a rope about 8 inches long. Flatten slightly, and place about 2 tablespoons of peanut butter chips down the center. Bring up the long sides of the dough around the peanut butter chips, carefully pinching to seal them inside. Roll the filled rope again, to a length of about 12-14 inches, and twist into a pretzel shape.
  5. Place the stuffed pretzels on a lightly greased baking sheet, and allow to proof, uncovered, for about 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Bring about 2 quarts of water to a simmer in a wide, shallow pot. Add the baking soda. The mixture will bubble up for a few seconds. Boil the pretzels, a few at a time, for about a minute on each side. Drain on clean kitchen towels and place on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  7. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with salt. Bake for 16-20 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Serve warm with Vanilla Malted Cream Cheese Chocolate Dip.

To Make the Vanilla Malted Cream Cheese Chocolate Dip:

  1. Place the cream cheese, malt powder, sugar, and vanilla in a small mixing bowl and whip on medium high speed until creamy.
  2. Slowly drizzle in the cold cream, while whipping, until the mixture is fluffy and holds stiff peaks.
  3. Fold in the chocolate chips and serve with warm soft pretzels.
