Embrace the Joy of Holiday Baking (and No-Bake!)
The holiday season is a magical time, filled with warmth, cheer, and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked goods. For many, myself included, this time of year means spending cherished moments in the kitchen, crafting delicious treats for loved ones. Whether it’s whipping up festive party desserts, preparing thoughtful homemade gifts, or simply indulging in the creative process, holiday baking is truly a highlight.
While the term “baking” often conjures images of ovens and rising dough, some of the most delightful holiday confections require no baking at all! This year, we’re diving into the world of no-bake wonders with a recipe that perfectly captures the spirit of the season: homemade cookies and cream peppermint patties. They’re an effortless way to spread holiday cheer and create memorable edible gifts.

The Irresistible Allure of Peppermint and Chocolate
Peppermint and chocolate are a quintessential holiday flavor combination, evoking nostalgic memories and a sense of festive indulgence. There’s something inherently wintry and comforting about the cool, crisp taste of peppermint paired with the decadent richness of chocolate. This classic duo makes peppermint patties a popular choice for holiday candy trays and gift baskets.
Around this time of year, you’ll find numerous recipes for homemade peppermint patties. They’re beloved not only for their delightful flavor but also for their relatively simple preparation. Unlike many complex holiday desserts, peppermint patties are forgiving and fun to make, making them an excellent project for home cooks of all skill levels. They offer a delightful hands-on experience that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
A Delicious Twist: Cookies and Cream Peppermint Patties
While classic peppermint patties are undeniably delicious, I wanted to elevate this beloved treat with a unique and exciting twist. The addition of cookies and cream seemed like the perfect enhancement, introducing an extra layer of texture and flavor that takes these candies from great to absolutely extraordinary. Imagine the smooth, creamy mint center, now dotted with crunchy bits of chocolate sandwich cookies!
The secret lies in incorporating finely crushed chocolate sandwich cookies into the creamy filling. As you knead them into the simple cream cheese and powdered sugar mixture, they contribute a delightful crunch and a subtle yet distinct extra chocolate note. This textural contrast makes each bite a more dynamic and enjoyable experience, setting these cookies and cream peppermint patties apart from their traditional counterparts. It’s a small change that makes a huge difference, transforming a familiar favorite into something truly special and memorable.

The Ghirardelli Difference: Quality Chocolate for Perfect Dipping
The quality of your chocolate makes all the difference when dipping confections, and for these cookies and cream peppermint patties, I highly recommend using Ghirardelli 60% cacao chocolate. Ghirardelli is renowned for its premium chocolate products, and their baking chips melt incredibly smoothly, providing a beautiful, even coating for your candies.
The 60% cacao bittersweet chocolate is particularly ideal for this recipe. Its rich, deep chocolate flavor perfectly complements the cool, sweet mint filling, creating a harmonious balance that prevents the patties from being overly sweet. This precise cocoa percentage ensures a sophisticated taste profile, enhancing the overall experience without overpowering the delicate peppermint and cookie notes. Investing in high-quality chocolate for dipping guarantees a professional finish and an unparalleled flavor.

Elegant Presentation: Garnish for Gifting
Once your delectable cookies and cream peppermint patties are dipped and set, a final touch of garnish can truly elevate their appearance, making them look extra special for the holidays. A sprinkle of chopped peppermint bark on top not only adds another layer of festive flavor but also provides a beautiful, sophisticated touch that screams “holiday indulgence.”
Imagine these perfectly crafted candies nestled in a clear cello bag, tied with a luxurious satin ribbon or a rustic twine. They transform into thoughtful, personalized homemade gifts that anyone would be thrilled to receive. Whether you’re presenting them to neighbors, colleagues, friends, or family, these beautifully packaged peppermint patties are a testament to your holiday spirit and culinary creativity. They’re a simple gesture that delivers immense joy.

Tips for Success: Crafting Perfect Peppermint Patties
Creating these no-bake cookies and cream peppermint patties is a straightforward process, but a few tips can help ensure your success and make the experience even more enjoyable:
- Cream Cheese Consistency: Ensure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature. This will help it combine smoothly with the powdered sugar, preventing lumps and creating a uniformly creamy filling.
- Powdered Sugar Adjustment: The recipe calls for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 cups of powdered sugar. Start with 1 1/2 cups and gradually add more until the mixture forms a stiff, workable dough. The exact amount can vary slightly depending on the humidity and the consistency of your cream cheese. You want a dough that’s firm enough to roll into balls without being sticky.
- Crushing the Cookies: For the best texture, crush your chocolate sandwich cookies into small, varied pieces. Some finer crumbs will integrate into the cream, while larger bits will provide that satisfying crunch. A food processor works quickly, or you can place them in a Ziploc bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
- Chilling is Key: After forming the patties, a brief chill in the refrigerator or freezer is crucial. This hardens the mint filling, making them much easier to dip into the melted chocolate without losing their shape.
- Melting Chocolate Properly: Melt your Ghirardelli chocolate gently. A double boiler or microwave on low power, stirred frequently, works best. Avoid overheating the chocolate, as it can seize or become thick. Once melted, let it cool slightly before dipping the patties. This prevents the warm chocolate from melting the peppermint filling.
- Dipping Technique: Use a fork or a dipping tool to submerge each patty in the melted chocolate. Tap off any excess chocolate before placing the patty on parchment paper to set. This ensures a thin, even coating.
- Storage: Store the finished peppermint patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep well for up to two weeks, or they can be frozen for longer enjoyment.
