Good afternoon, friends! I’m absolutely thrilled to share a couple of fun and heartwarming Valentine’s Day ideas with you today. If you’re looking for a way to make your holiday celebrations a little sweeter and more memorable, you’ve come to the right place. We’re diving into the enchanting world of edible crafts, proving that sometimes, the most extraordinary gifts are the ones you bake yourself.
Did you know you could actually make a functional, adorable gift box entirely out of cookies? It sounds almost magical, doesn’t it? But it’s true! This project is not only incredibly fun but also much simpler than it sounds, making it a fantastic activity for bakers of all skill levels. Forget the elaborate pastry techniques; with a few basic tools and a good roll-out cookie recipe, you’ll be stacking up edible masterpieces in no time.

Choosing Your Perfect Cookie Base: The Foundation of Your Edible Gift
The success of your cookie gift box hinges on selecting the right dough. You’ll want a roll-out or cut-out cookie recipe that holds its shape well during baking and provides a sturdy foundation for stacking. While many options exist, I have a few trusted recipes that always deliver. For a classic taste, my vanilla cut-out cookie recipe is a go-to, offering a delightful blank canvas for decoration. If you’re a chocolate lover, my simply perfect chocolate version is rich and flavorful. However, for today’s special Valentine’s Day project, and keeping my kids in mind, I opted for my dark chocolate graham cracker recipe. This recipe is not only incredibly tasty, often described as tasting like an Oreo, but it also incorporates wholesome whole grains, adding a healthier twist to our sweet indulgence. It’s the perfect choice when you want a treat that feels good to give and even better to eat.

Step-by-Step Guide: Assembling Your Edible Heart-Shaped Gift Box
Creating these cookie boxes is an enjoyable process that yields impressive results. Here’s a detailed breakdown of how to bring your edible vision to life:
1. Prepare and Roll Your Dough to Perfection
The first critical step is ensuring your dough is rolled to an even thickness. This is paramount for creating a stable cookie box where all layers fit together seamlessly. Aim for a thickness of 1/4-inch. To achieve this consistently, I highly recommend using rolling pin rings. These ingenious rings attach to the ends of your rolling pin, acting as guides to ensure every part of your dough is precisely 1/4-inch thick. This consistency is key for even baking and a sturdy final structure.
2. Precision Cutting for the Heart of Your Box
Once your dough is perfectly rolled, it’s time to cut out your heart shapes. For this project, I used the largest cutter from this versatile heart-shaped cookie cutter set. If you’re using my dark chocolate graham cracker recipe, you should have enough dough to make at least two complete cookie boxes, offering ample opportunity for gifting! For each box, you will need several heart cookies. First, cut out four full, solid heart shapes. These will form the base and the lid of your box. With the remaining dough, you will then cut out six more heart shapes. For these six, use a sharp paring knife to carefully cut away the middle part of each heart, leaving a consistent 1/2-inch cookie border. These ’empty’ heart frames will form the sides of your cookie box, creating the cavity where you’ll place your treats.
3. Baking and Cooling: The Patience Game
Carefully transfer your cut-out cookies to baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake according to your chosen recipe’s instructions, ensuring they are fully baked and slightly crisp, which is crucial for structural integrity. Once baked, let them cool completely on a wire rack. Patience here is a virtue; trying to assemble warm cookies will lead to disaster.
4. Assembling Your Edible Structure
Now for the exciting part – assembly! Once your cookies are thoroughly cooled, it’s time to stack them up like so:

You’ll use a little royal icing to adhere them together. Royal icing acts as both a delicious glue and a beautiful decorative element. Start with one solid heart as your base. Pipe a line of royal icing around the perimeter of the base, then carefully place one of your ’empty’ heart frames on top, pressing gently to secure. Repeat this process with the remaining five ’empty’ heart frames, stacking them one on top of the other, each secured with royal icing. This builds up the walls of your cookie box. Finally, take your last solid heart cookie and carefully place it on top of the stacked frames to form the lid. This creates a functional, adorable, and edible container!
5. Decorate and Personalize!
The real fun begins once your cookie box is assembled and the royal icing has set enough to handle. Now, it’s time to decorate! Use additional royal icing to create beautiful designs on the top of the box. Think intricate patterns, simple dots, your loved one’s initial, or festive swirls. You can use different colored icings, sprinkles, or edible glitter to make your cookie box truly sparkle. And voila!

You now have a perfect, delicious, and utterly charming place to hide a fun little treat. It’s an edible treasure chest, waiting to be filled with love and delightful surprises.
My kids absolutely adore Annie’s Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks – they’re perfectly sweet, delightfully chewy, and bursting with fun, fruity flavor. As a parent, I’m genuinely happy to give them these snacks because I know they are crafted from organic ingredients, completely free from artificial flavors, synthetic colors, preservatives, or high-fructose corn syrup. It’s a delicious and wholesome choice for any occasion, especially for spreading a little Valentine’s cheer.
Beyond the Box: A Free Printable Valentine for Classmates!
Making these cookie boxes was such a fun little craft project, and I’m incredibly excited to present them to my boys on Valentine’s Day. But the festive spirit doesn’t stop there! Since I always enjoy creating fun and unique Valentines for them to share with their classmates, I’ve also designed a super cute printable that perfectly pairs with Annie’s Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks. It’s an easy, budget-friendly, and adorable way for kids to celebrate with their friends.

You can download the high-resolution JPEG file right here. It’s designed for easy printing: just print it out on letter-size cardstock as a 5×7 image, which will give you two Valentines per page. A crucial tip for printing: be sure to uncheck the “Fit Picture to Frame” option in your printer settings to ensure the cards print at their intended size without distortion. Once printed, simply use some festive washi tape or a dab of glue to attach a pack of Annie’s Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks. Sweet and simple!
